Computer accessories are a dime a dozen in today’s technology marketplace. But when Alex dropped this Delux ergonomic mouse on my desk to review, I had to do a double take. The look of the mouse itself is akin to that of a traditional ergonomic mouse. By that, I mean it looks like one of those controllers Sulu used circa Star Trek to navigate the USS Enterprise. The big difference? It’s got RGB light strips to give it some extra flare.
Build Quality
The Delux M618 Plus Vertical Mouse retails for $31.99 and is built to be an ergonomic right-handed mouse. There are two sets of circular light strips: one at the top underneath the glossy Delux logo and a larger ring at the bottom. The colors are not customizable but they do have a breathing motion and a large array of colors that fit in with any setup. By no means would I compare these RGB lights to the quality you see in say a Razer product, but it adds a nice touch. The mouse is wired with a cable that is not too obtrusive. There’s also a removable palm rest that clips into the bottom of the mouse. As someone who has carpal tunnel, I found the palm rest to be immensely helpful as it offers additional wrist support.
If you have not used an ergonomic mouse before, it will take some time to adjust to the buttons as the hand placement is different from a traditional mice. Once you get the hang of it though, it does become significantly more comfortable. Keep in mind that ergonomic mice do not necessarily allow users to operate lightning fast and you may find yourself taking time to adjust. The feel of the M618 Plus mouse itself is smooth with a matte black texture that feels soft to touch. Because of its larger curved shape compared to a traditional mouse, input applies less pressure on a user’s wrist thus producing less strain. I noticed this after using this mouse as my daily driver and my wrists were less sore after hours of computing.
Functions
The Delux M618 Plus mouse is easy to setup thanks to its plug and play ready nature via USB. In terms of functions, there are two buttons on the front left that act as a forward and backward button. In theory, this is a great ergonomic feature, but I found myself accidentally clicking buttons more frequently than I am accustomed to. Additionally, I found myself having to strain my thumb through repetition of an upward movement whenever I needed to click a button due to the bulkier build of the mouse. On the outer surface is the left click, scroll wheel, and right click button. The M618 Plus mouse also has an adjustable DPI that goes up to 1600. You are unable to program buttons in games or set up commands with it.
I would be hesitant to use this in any setting other than an office or for casual browsing. It’s rather bulky due to its size and I don’t consider it to be portable. At times, the scroll wheel can also be rather finicky. Even moving up and down on an Excel sheet or reading a web page can cause “jumps” while scrolling. Nevertheless, the buttons themselves are rather tactile and clicky which is nice.
Although I have a large mat on my desk that the Delux M618 Plus works rather well on, I have found the mouse to have difficulties functioning on some surfaces such as glass. It is almost impossible to use on certain areas, and in those situations, I revert back to the trackpad on my laptop instead.
Overall Thoughts
If you absolutely need an ergonomic mouse, the Delux M618 Plus vertical mouse is a relatively affordable option that focuses more on comfort than anything else. That indeed is what it does well. The removable palm wrist is a nice bonus and the RGB lights add a touch of color in what would be an otherwise boring mouse. However, don’t expect amazing things out of this device. The mouse sensor works best on a mouse pad making it less versatile and the scroll wheel can be difficult to navigate at times. There are other ergonomic mice on the market that are potentially less bulky to maneuver around. Despite a strong attempt to create a comfortable ergonomic mouse with some gaming inspired aesthetics, I still found myself having trouble using the M618 Plus in my day to day routine.
