There is a smart LED light built into the base of the mug that communicates the status of the mug with you. A blinking white light indicates that the beverage is heating up, while a solid white light indicates that your drink is ready at the set temperature. A red light indicates that the mug needs to be charged, while a green light indicates that it’s fully charged and ready to be used.
Usability
The Ember smart mug out of the box is simple and easy to use. What’s nice about the mug is that the app isn’t required if you’re comfortable with the default temperature of 135°F. If you are picky with your drink temperature (hence why you are considering purchasing the mug) then the app is simple to set up and use.
A few things to note: assuming you take some time to consume your hot beverage, you do have to charge it after practically every use. Since the battery is built into the bottom of the mug, it does make the mug significantly heavier than a regular ceramic mug. Additionally, because of the battery, you must wash the mug by hand and dry the bottom of the mug before placing it on the charging coaster.
One of the coolest features of the mug is auto sleep. The Ember smart mug is smart enough to sense when you’ve finished your drink and to turn off the internal heating mechanism. The mug will enter sleep mode when empty or after 2 hours of inactivity. The mug is smart enough to wake up when it senses movement or liquid.
Bottom line, the mug performs as advertised - it keeps your drink hot.
Pairing the App
Although it is a fun gimmicky addition to the mug, the app is not necessary to use the Ember. The connection process is quick and simple. After downloading the app from the app store, make sure that your Bluetooth is turned on and then follow the prompts on the app to pair your mug. Once you’re in the app, you can set the temperature of your mug and also adjust the color of the smart LED light that indicates the status of the mug. You have a range of temperatures to choose from between 120°F - 145°F and like goldilocks, you can find the temperature that’s just right for you.
Final Thoughts
If you are someone who likes their drink at the perfect temperature, the Ember temperature control smart mug may be the perfect mug for you. The accompanying app allows you to select your perfect temperature. The mug is slick looking with its white or black ceramic design, and the charging coaster is small enough so its not an eye-sore on your counter or desk. I found the battery life to be perfectly adequate when fully charged as it allowed me to finish my drink within a reasonable amount of time. The auto sleep mode which engages when the mug is empty is a great feature to conserve battery life. If you’re a slow drinker of hot beverages, don’t overlook this mug. The $100 price tag is tough to justify, but if you are constantly throwing away lukewarm beverages, this is a product well worth your consideration.
