For only $49.99, the Fiil T1X offers a unique earbud experience and a lot of features for this price point. I decided to put them to the test to see how they withstood my everyday regular use for about a month. The verdict? An overall great pair of earbuds with just a few setbacks.
Out of the Box
The Fiil T1X earbuds come very neatly packaged with earpieces and cases separated by a foam container. Each ear tip and ear support also has its allotted individual slot allowing for a clean and easy unboxing experience. The earbuds come with the standard packaging of a charging case, four different ear tips, three different earwings and a USB-C charging cable. The rectangular charging case has dimensions of 3 in. for length, 1.4 in. for width and 1.25 in. for height. The case and headphones together weigh in at 55 grams with the two earpieces weighing in at 10.5 grams respectively. Although the earpieces are light in itself, I would consider the case to be fairly bulky when compared to other competitors on the market. Fiil also includes a DSP chip for these earphones, allowing for additional noise reduction. These earbuds are also IP65 resistant to keep dust and water out, making them ideal for sporting usage. They also come equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 technology, allowing for a longer range and quicker pairing to get you connected instantly without down time.
Battery Life
Simply put, the battery on these earbuds don’t give out. I was very impressed with this important feature of the Fiil T1X earbuds. I usually wear just one earbud at a time and when I did, I only had to charge at a cadence of once a week. I was also pleasantly surprised with the quick charging speeds, allowing me to wear the earbud again in minimal time. On top of that, regardless of whether you’re switching between music or podcast or phone calls, battery life remained consistent and did not drain faster. Fiil claims 24 hours of playtime or 36 hours of call time and I have yet to see any problems with those claims. As long as users are able to casually charge on your desk or car throughout the day as needed, these earbuds will take you to the distance. Despite a bulkier case size, I would consider that a small trade off considering the long lasting battery life of the case and earpieces combined.
Fit & Comfort
How earphones fit each person is a very personal element, but Fiil does its best to offer a good fit for a variety of users. Included with the earbuds come four different shaped ear tips. Unfortunately for me, even at the smallest size, I found the buds to be an extremely snug fit. For those who can’t quite find a proper fitting tip, the earbuds also come with earwings for additional support, but I honestly do not understand how they help lock in the earpiece to your ear. Even in one of the pictures the model wears in the ad, I don’t see it touching any part of their ear that would make the fit more supportive. As a side note, even without the support of the earwing, the Fiil T1X earbuds fit a very low profile which is different from most of these other true wireless stereo buds that tend to protrude pretty far off the earlobe. If you are used to a standard sizing for an earpiece, I don’t think the fit will be a problem for those listening to music everyday at their desk or answering phone calls. However if you’re considering these for exercise purposes, the fit is a very different story. The T1X popped out of my ear regularly and although they never completely fell out, they would still dislodge out of place, causing me to continually readjust when needed.
Functions
Some headphone makers create control features that are never used or are too complicated to remember. The T1X however, works incredibly well. There are typical function controls including volume adjustment, skip, previous, answer and decline calls. The Fiil T1X earbuds use a touch control system that honestly works fantastically. The controls are responsive and immediately works. I found myself using them frequently to answer calls and to skip tracks.
Fiil also offers an app called Fiil+ on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It displays the charge percentage of each earbud and allows you to control the equalization. The battery display is a bonus to have on the iPhone and allows me to keep track of my charge more easily. The app also allows you to shift the EQ to three settings of bass including original or treble while allowing you to choose up to 15 different preset equalizers. While it does perform minor adjustments, I felt the original setting worked for my everyday use case. It’s nice to have access to the controls, but with that many customization options, it just seems a bit overkill.
In my opinion, the biggest selling point to me was the IP65 claim. An IP65 rating for the device means it has the capability to protect dust and water from getting inside the earbuds. Earbuds with IP65 ratings mean users can wear them for all sorts of workouts. I took these running and played basketball with them as well, so even with heavy sweating, they performed great in this aspect. I even ran them under the faucet to clean them up and test the rating. While I wouldn’t recommend doing it often, the T1X cleaned up nicely and didn’t have a problem while getting wet.
Sound Quality
According to the website, the Fiil T1X earbuds pack either a ¼” dynamic driver or 8mm dynamic driver in its earpiece. This seems to be a discrepancy on their website and online store. If they’re claiming 8mm (0.315 in.), that is a very big driver size that should pack a big sound. After using them for some time now, they sound more like a ¼” driver to me. The quality of this pair of earbuds noticeably packs strong bass and while not emitting the heaviest sound, it still gives off an extra weight. Other than that, the sound quality itself is pretty average and for the size of these earbuds, I was expecting a little bit more. In general, the sound quality lacks the “crispiness” factor I was expecting from a true wireless stereo earbud. Despite also having a DSP chip to help with noise reduction by 30%, I had a hard time telling if the noise reduction was actually working or if it was because the fit was so snug in my eardrum. It just blocked out all other sound.
The Verdict
The Fiil T1X is an all-around earphone option that does a bit of everything well. The battery life, the water resistance of the IP65 certification and the touch controls are the star features of these earbuds. If you’re looking for a set of earbuds that can handle the daily routines of taking calls and listening to music throughout the workday while withstanding workouts after hours, the T1X can handle the challenge.
