Google retires Chromecast and ushers in new streamer
For many years the word “Chromecast” has been the defining identifier for Android media streaming. Times change and things evolve. in 2024, Google has officially announced the next generation of their streaming hardware: the 4K Google TV Streamer.
With gigabit ethernit, built-in 802.11AC Wifi, 32 GB of internal storage, and 4 GB of ram, the new TV streamer is Google's strongest media streaming option yet.
One major departure from a traditional Chromecast stick is that the TV streamer is designed to be a set-top box. As a small oval shaped product, the Streamer isn’t too intrusive on top of an entertainment center. Google will also supply buyers with an included remote to control the box that can also double up as a smart home hub. Gemini AI will be incorporated with the streaming mechanics to identify content to summarize for viewers.
With support for formats like Dolby Vision, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, HDR10, and HDR10+, most of what consumers need are all here.
While Google will continue to sell Chromecasts for the time being, there are no more plans for new Chromecast products.
Google will begin selling the TV Streamer on September 24, 2024. Unlike cheaper Chromecast options, the MSRP for the device will be $99.99.
