Zima Dental Pod Review

Cleans Your Gunk So you don’t have to

Ads are everywhere! Ads are also mostly annoying and intrusive. Yet sometimes ads actually do the job they were intended to do and introduce people to products they otherwise would not have known about. That’s how I came across the Zima Dental Pod. According to the Orthodontics Association, nearly 4 million people need or have braces. Those users then are supposed to transition to a form of retainer where they’re supposed to keep wearing them for the rest of their lives. Most of us don’t do that! However, if you are one of those who actually follow the gameplan, keeping those retainers fresh and clean is definitely a chore. Technology aims for the luxury of convenience and that’s exactly what this Dental Pod does.

Dissolving Tablet

While not required, you can use a dissolving tablet for a deeper clean.

The Zima Dental Pod is quite simple to use. It’s a bowl with a lid that plugs into an outlet. There’s a single power button that starts the sole operation of the product. All you have to do is fill the pod with cool water, drop a cleansing tablet to dissolve into the water, and press the start button with the lid on. Within a few minutes, the entire process is over and the retainer should be crystal clean.

Ultrasonic Waves

Ultrasonic vibrations can clean effectively

So what exactly is the tech behind this? Zima uses ultrasonic waves that measure at 42,000 Hz to vibrate off the nature plaque and stain buildup on things we put into our mouths everyday. That’s really all there is to it. High-frequency vibrations act as a replacement for a human operated toothbrush to scrub away the discharge.

I personally started using this for my mouth guard, which I used to soak in vinegar to clean. I hated the smell of the vinegar cup and also didn’t think it really cleaned the stains on my guard as deeply as it needed to. While I use mine with a mouth guard, the Dental Pod can house Invisalign, retainers, and even dentures. It’s a round form factor and deeper than it looks.

Out of all the ultrasonic cleaning machines I’ve come across on Amazon, the Dental Pod is the most compact and minimalistic in appearance. It doesn’t take up much of any space on my ever growingly crowded vanity top filled with dental items. It seems like the older you get, the more stuff you need to use doesn’t it?

Using a tablet enhances the cleaning

Deeper Clean

Speaking of stuff to use, you know how I mentioned dropping a dental cleaning tablet into the water? You don’t technically need to soak the mouth guard with a tablet every single time. The Dental Pod washes and cleans the item with just water as well. The tablets help with the need to thoroughly cleanse rough patches of stains that regular water struggles to vibrate off. A box of tablets does add up in price as they’re one time use only. Fortunately, the additional purchase is merely for an added bonus and not essential to the base product.

final thoughts

Overall I’m a fan of the simple design of the Dental Pod with the exception of the power port. There’s a warning sticker elaborating to operators not to get water into the port as it plugs directly to a source of electricity. For a product that requires rinsing, especially after the cleaning process is done with a dissolved tablet, water easily streams down the curves of the body and into the port. There should have been a rubber stopper that could be attached and detached to assist in the prevention of water seeking into the port while rinsing. It’s a simple solution that I’m shocked they didn’t implement into the design.

Otherwise, the Zima Dental Pod is unobtrusive, it works, and it's a piece of technology that I personally use more often than many of the other things I own. While it isn’t a necessity by any means as physical brushing with a $1 toothbrush probably accomplishes the same task (even though Zima disputes that in their marketing material), I still find the Dental Pod to be a product that is easily worth the value it supplies from the work it provides. I do feel that my mouth guard is cleaner than it’s ever been and I did carefully take care of mine manually prior to purchasing the Zima.
