While I typically have a desk setup with separate audio speakers and microphones that I use for both work and leisure, I’ve quickly come to realize that it’s also important to have a reliable pair of headphones or earbuds because you never know what kind of random noises pop up that require you to move around. With two dogs at home and the occasional contractor or other people working at the house, there’s been more than enough times where I’ve had to work downstairs away from my usual setup while trying to simultaneously manage barking in the background and still host presentations at my laptop.

Let’s start with the H9 gaming headset. I like this matte looking black color and although it's simple, there’s a nice design touch to it like the smiley face on the cups that give it a unique spin. The headset feels very lightweight, weighing only 260 grams and it’s solid feeling in the hands. While the H9 doesn’t feel like a super premium headset, I definitely got the impression that it would hold up for long periods of time and was built well. Even the stitching along the top of the headset looks and feels durable. This headset is not bluetooth compatible and must connect to a device through a 3.5 mm headphone jack or USB-A. Users can also configure it to connect to the provided audio dongle as well. Included with the purchase of the headset comes a few attachments - one for the microphone arm that clicks into the headset, and another for the USB-connected audio dongle that houses a sound card that allows users to listen to audio in 7.1 surround sound.

I was pleasantly surprised with how comfortable the H9 headset was. The ear cushions and top frame are very soft to touch and molded around my head and ears perfectly. I ended up using this headphone for hours on end in a given work day, going through multiple meetings with them during my testing period. Adjusting it was seamless and I found myself being able to use them for hours on end without any discomfort. They do come out of the box a little snug so I recommend moving them around when you initially get them to make them more comfortable. FIFINE advertises the H9 as being passive noise canceling so that users are still able to hear typing sounds and other external noise while wearing them.

Audio quality on the H9 is really quite pleasant. For both headphone and headset mode, I didn’t have any complaints. Audio was clear and I enjoyed listening to my Spotify playlists on these. I also didn’t have any issues with audio while wearing this headset through a variety of softwares like Microsoft Teams, Discord, Zoom, and Google Meets. While I did notice some differences when using the audio dongle to enable 7.1 surround sound, I thought the H9 audio sounded great even without it. Bass was not overdone and all the highs and lows sounded natural, especially while I was listening to LoFi while wearing these. The surround sound capabilities are beneficial when relying on your sense of hearing during gameplay as in tracking footsteps behind you.

There’s a few different ways to change audio and mic settings for the H9. If you plug in the USB audio dongle, you have the option to use the 7.1 surround sound and adjust the mic and audio levels. There’s also a toggle to mute the microphone directly on the dongle.

In terms of mic quality, the H9 is good enough for normal usages. I don’t think there would be any issues using this headset for gaming to communicate with teammates as I have been able to have clear quality dialogue in plenty of other applications with it. People I’ve spoken with through using the headset tell me my audio is clear and comes through without issues. I noticed at times that my audio was a little more sensitive than others, so being able to adjust the microphone arm distance on this headset was very beneficial.

Next, let’s talk about the AmpliGame H3 gaming headset. There’s an oval smiley face on the H3 that have RGBs that light up when plugged in. They’re not the most vibrant looking RGBs but they do make the headset look fun and aesthetically cute to look at. The ear cushions on the H3 are soft and it’s easy to adjust the headphones so that they sit comfortably for long periods of time. I had no issues using these all day throughout my many meetings and even beyond that just to listen to music and watch videos with. You’ll have to connect the headset via a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but out of the box, I was a little confused as to how to set these up. They are indeed plug and play, but the headset comes attached with both a 3.5 mm headphone jack and USB-A plug splitting from one cable. The USB-A plug has to be plugged in for the RGB lights to power. This means that if you want to utilize the full look and feel of the H3, you’ll need to use the two ports simultaneously. For those looking to use the microphone, it’s easy to attach and detach the addition into the headset.

There’s also an attached controller for volume and mic mute switch. I found myself using this many times throughout my day, but while listening to music, I wish FIFINE would include a few more buttons on here for play/pause or skip track. It would also be helpful to have some kind of indicator light when the microphone was muted, as I often forgot that I turned this on or off and was wondering why no one was able to hear me.

The sound quality of these headphones is impressively good. I watched different kinds of videos and listened to a lot of music while wearing the H3. As an everyday user, I had no complaints and thought everything sounded crisp and clear. I think anyone using these as an everyday headset for computing needs without doing anything too crazy will be pleased with them. The microphone quality of the H3 matches that of the H9 at least in my ears. Without a doubt, the H3 headset can power through a full day of work and play.

final thoughts

They’re essentially very similar headsets with slightly different variations of function. Oh and did I mention how adorably cute those smiley faces are?

Both the H3 and H9 retail for $37.99. They’re essentially very similar headsets with slightly different variations of function. Oh and did I mention how adorably cute those smiley faces are? Both are plug and play and have solid audio and microphone quality. They’re also both made sturdily and have the same level of comfort that can last all day. I found the H3 to have a more unique design thanks to its light up RGBs. For anyone looking for a budget everyday set of gaming headphones, it’s hard to go wrong.
