As someone who notoriously goes through most of the day with their phone waiting until their battery is about to die before charging, I was excited to open up the Belkin BoostCharge Magnetic Wireless Charger Stand that Alex picked up on Amazon.

Small in size and lightweight enough to move around the home or office, this charger is specifically meant for iPhone 12 and newer Apple devices thanks to the impressive and convenient MagSafe feature. Now that this handy stand has been sitting at my desk during my workday for over a month now, here are five things you should know before buying.

If you have a medium to thick case, you won’t be able to charge your iPhone with the case

  1. It really does hold your iPhone up (without a case)

I check my phone frequently throughout the day for notifications and constantly bump into it while grabbing sticky notes or my pen. The MagSafe functionality is not only very convenient but impressively sturdy on this device. You can literally hold the stand upside down and your iPhone will not budge from its attachment. However, there is a caveat. The downside to this is if you have a thicker case, you won’t be able to charge your iPhone inside the case. Even though I have a Peel case, which is considered thin by market standards, my iPhone cannot stand on the charger as easily and is more likely to fall off the stand if I attempt the position. As a result, I typically just peel the case off (pun not intended) while charging. For those with thick cases (such as the Otter Box), you’ll have to remove all the pieces of your case in order to charge which can be tedious. This makes the stand a non-viable option for case users.

2. Portrait or landscape mode is a gamechanger

One of the most advertised features of the Belkin BoostCharge Magnetic Wireless Charger Stand is the ability to flip your iPhone into portrait or landscape mode while it’s charging. For this feature alone, I recommend this charging stand. The possibilities are endless when you’re able to swap between modes while charging. I’ve taken this charger down to the kitchen with me a few times to follow cooking recipes on YouTube and I also keep it at my desk so I can have Netflix playing in the background. Even when your phone is on the stand, it’s easy to use with one hand and flip it into vertical or horizontal mode seamlessly.

3. You’ll need to select the power supply option when you purchase

I found this one to be a little odd but depending on what you select upon checking out, you may or may not be provided a wall charger. Pricing will also vary. As of this article’s publishing date, the BoostCharge wireless charger stand without the outlet is $24.99 whereas the variant with power retails at about $32.19. You can thank Apple for starting this trend in consumer technology.

4. Charging is relatively fast

Belkin’s BoostCharge Magnetic Wireless Charger Stand fast charges at up to 7.5W. This charger is geared more for those who simply want a place to rest their phones while multitasking on other projects or letting videos run in the background at a steady trickle charge. There are other Qi chargers that charge at much faster rates, but I’ve yet to have issues with this. Sure, it may not be the speediest, but if you regularly charge your phone throughout the workday or while sleeping, 7.5W should be plenty enough speed to keep your device alive while also functioning at the same time.

5. Its simple, modern look will aesthetically match in any setting

This charger comes in two colors: black and white. While the build material is made of plastic and not the most premium feeling to touch, you can tell it’s still up to the Belkin brand quality and put together well. The slim profile fits in any corner of a desk without taking up much room and the circular design gives it a modern and subtle flair. There is an LED indicator light that flashes while a device is in charging mode on the stand. However, because your phone will typically block this light from your view, you’d have to be checking on the charger from behind to see if the LED light is on or not. Regardless, this Qi stand gets credit in my book for ticking all the look and feel boxes.

Final Thoughts

For the $25 price point, I recommend this charger even with all its small quirks. I enjoy the design Belkin created and how convenient it is to carry from one room to another. The one-handed functionality to be able to flip it into portrait or landscape mode comes with many great uses and it works exactly as advertised. If you’re looking for an at-home charger for your Apple iPhone with MagSafe capabilities, the BoostCharge Magnetic Wireless Charger Stand should be towards the top of your list.
